Introducing SSLG’s Research Fellow

Emily Tracey graduated from Edinburgh College of Art’s Masters Programme in Architectural Conservation in 2007.  Her dissertation closely examined Area Conservation and Post Disaster Reconstruction.  While writing her dissertation, she spent one month in New Orleans, Louisiana researching the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  It was this catastrophic event that motivated Emily to study Conservation.  Prior to this, she was an artistic set designer working for a local community theatre group based in Connecticut.  Having previously studied fine art and art history in Florence, Edinburgh’s dramatic architectural vistas of world heritage site status became the perfect setting for studying architectural conservation.

Shortly after finishing the Masters programme, Emily started the Research Fellowship.  The position was established through a Minute of Agreement between SSLG and Historic Scotland in order to provide support and to complement the work accomplished between SSLG and its partners, the British Geological Survey (BGS) and Historic Scotland.  The Fellowship provides a beneficial learning experience mentored by Colin Tennant and placed within BGS alongside the Building Stone Team in the Minerals Programme at Murchison House in Edinburgh.  The position of the Research Fellow was established to further develop the use of indigenous building stone in Scotland.  It was created specifically to enhance and further develop our knowledge of stone on an architectural, historical, and conservation level through projects related to the built environment.  The aim of the Fellowship is to assist SSLG in the act of securing the availability of indigenous materials and skills for the care, maintenance, and future of Scotland’s built heritage.

Emily has already worked on several research projects and is contributing to Building Stone Audits, Scottish Stone Resource Projects, and BGS Building Stone Enquiries, while furthering the development of a UK Natural Stone Database.  Emily has assisted in the organisation of a UK wide Building Stone Symposium, 'Building a Future for Stone' which took place in London on 1st October 2009.    The Fellowship has provided an opportunity to further enhance the role of building materials in our built heritage while simultaneously providing work experience and professional development within the field of architectural conservation.
